With our highest compliments and utmost honors, Bay Colony Antiques is extremely proud to offer for sale this fantastic 19th century antique painted document box. The box has an extremely rare paint decoration with a Native American War Chief portrait on the top. We’re unsure of who exactly the sitter is, but the feathered war bonnet and the fact that he was immortalized on this box lets us know he was an important individual. It’s extremely rare to find portrait art of Native Americans because artists at the time were mainly itinerant & worked on commission. The box has a nice gold stenciled design and the painted fleur-de-lis on the lid may hint at a French origin. The box retains its original green painted interior with a painted bunch of flowers at the center. The box measures 18” wide x 12” deep x 8” tall.
