An incredibly-detailed gold lacquer box crafted by an experienced artist that still shines today.
A thin wood box and lid has been coated in gold lacquer with tiny accents of black and mother of pearl. I love how the artist has used mother of pearl or fish scales in the peacock feathers that gives a subtle glitter when viewed. The painting is very minute, and the workmanship is so very fine. The box lid fits the box snugly.
MEASUREMENTS
4 7/8” (12.4 cm) long x 3 ¾” (9.5 cm) wide x 2 3/8” (5.9 cm) tall. Weighs 4.7 oz (145 g)
CONDITION
Overall, the box has a great intact look. The lacquer on the face and sides of the box has faded slightly. There is a significant lacquer chip on the bottom edge of the box and two small chips on the flange. There are a couple of scratches on the walls of the interior that do not go through to the wood. There is slight wear to the rocks and the gold lacquer on the top of lid. The base also shows slight wear.
A gorgeous tour de force by a master Japanese artist.
